Check out this documentary entitled "Style Wars", on graffiti in New York City in the early 80s. It was awarded the documentary grand prize at the Sundance Film Festival in 1984. It's recent re-release Style Wars: Revisited was just named DVD of the year by the Onion.
"Style Wars captures the look and feel of New York's ramshackle subway system as the graffiti writers public playground, battleground and spectacular artistic canvas. Opposing them by every means possible were Mayor Edward Koch, the police, and the New York City Transit Authority."
